I've Been Thinking

Ok thats a scary thought for those that know me, but Ana Lutetia posted an incredible letter by Gwyneth Llewelyn on her blog (click her name to link) and it got me thinking as I said. I had already dismissed the whole trademark thing, deciding that if they want me to do all that work, on each post , I just will have to not mention them lol, mind you I can copy paste it on my slurls doc and just copy paste like i do everything else , it would just add more work to my whopping posts lol.

But then I thought, eek all those wonderful blogs that actualy have those names in their titles, what of them ? I know in blogger you can make your title different from your actual url but if you have to change that too , all those links in thousands of blogs having to be updated to take on the new url ?.

Is it even possible without cost to the owner to even do that? with the paid for sites like Linden Lifestyles as an example, will they want to, and what does that mean for the thousands of archived posts , to me archives are what is so wonderful about blogs, the ability to go back and look at what was in second life and find hidden treasures you may be too young to know about.

What if because of this they lose all that, and there is a lot of pride for some designers who have been blogged too, I have come across profiles in the past with links to blogs that have done posts on them, that means all that is lost too :((. This just keeps getting worse.

What about fashion planet and world of , both of those have SL in the names, would Tao have to spend hours or days redoing all those links to the feeds , argggggggggggggggggggggh, and would he want to ?

Just like the sims it is truly the content creators that arent part of that place that have made this place wonderful, and now they are going to be penalised for promotion, I cant even imagine anyone sitting at a blog and saying today was so thirsty I downed two bottles of Coke®, hell I cant even remember where to get those silly symbols from -new pc.

Then my evil kicked in, and I thought what if we got together and came to a mutual decision of what we could call those things now -hee hee. This is where my brain went.

Second Life = Phils Place

Linden Labs = The Mothership

Lindens = Lab Rats ( ok that one is evil :P)

But you get my point, so it would be today at phils place I went shopping in this FABULOUS STORE called (insert name -your all too fabulous to pick one ) I bought some incredible things and then the Mothership failed delivery, so on contacting the Lab Rats I found out that the Motherships asset servers were bung and Phils Place is updating later today *giggle fits*

Comment please just for laughs even I'd love to see peoples options lol.

One of the issues is that ALL blogs/sites that have SL™ or Second Life® in their domain name will have to get a new domain. Considering that a domain isn't that cheap...
I write in Portuguese blog that has secondlife in it's domain name: http://getasecondlife.net ...

Another issue, not yet clarified, is if we need to change ALL the posts we made since the blog exists. In self-hosted WordPress will be easy: we just need to add a plugin. But in Blogger, for instance, is an insane task.

Will domains with "SL" in it have to get a new one? I guess I can understand them not wanting people to use "secondlife" or "linden" but to go as far as the intials "sl" is a waste of effort. For people who do not play SL, the initials "sl" does not mean anything to them. I sure won't get a new domain name for iheartsl unless Linden Lab wants to buy it off me.

I really cant imagine them making us have to change older posts, they didn't have it that way when they were done, to expect us to go back is crazy, that would be like having to go back and find old books and such in RL that referred to trademark products and reprint the books.

I can't imagine any court of law letting them enforce that, from now on sure , but past is done and as the letter said its because of the blogs and all the write ups that Phils place has become what it is today...curious as to whether old news articles did the trademarks in those.

You're right too Gorgeous, I don't think the mothership can even own the rights to initials that way, to push that one

Okay -- since the name for the monetary unit is out, I propose that we call them "aspens". It's another tree. We can shorten it to "asps", which is, of course, the snake that did Cleopatra in. Make of that what you will ;)

I *really* like the "mothership"! I think this really is a term with the potential of breakthrough ... and it's much more sympathetic than calling them "gods".

Oh, and another thing, what about all those tags on flickr and to the blogs?!?? Will "SecondlifeTM" be all right as a tag ... omg, this is soon getting ridic.

Well, it is already.

To be honest I don't think they can claim copyright issues unless you are trying to earn money from it. The names DID make me laugh :)

I'm quite new to the world of blogging and so had no problem going back over 2 months posts editing in the required madness. Now I feel all ™ed and ®ed out!

To be honest I think it's crazy! I know you don't own any of those trademarks and you know I don't. The Mothership is certainly malfunctioning as badly as Phils Place. Who in their right mind would want to claim ownership of something that is in such a mess right now?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Second Life® virtual world and have a lot of respect for Linden Lab®. but figure this..... Your World. Your Imagination.™ I used to refer to my RL or my *#@! (censored for fear of prosecution!) how can it be mine if I can't refer to it as such? Duh! Nuf said! For my bigger take on the subject check out my blog post. (it's mine.. all mine!!)

I agree with Victoriarose tot he full.
Another thing I really liked was seeing people now unsing the term "RL(TM)" in chat and blogs in one go ...
